The Best Way To Light An Elevator Cab With LED

12/13/2017

I recently visited my grandmother-in-law in Florida; it was a lovely warm afternoon and we decided to go to lunch.  We went to a restaurant on the water front and I was pleasantly surprised to learn they had an elevator for us to use, instead of having Peg climb the stairs to the 2nd floor.  As we entered, I gazed up and noticed that 40% of their elevator ceiling lights were out!  Maybe this was their way of saving energy and keeping the elevator cab cooler?

These days, LEDs make lighting an elevator cab an easy thing to do.  The majority of ceiling lights are one of two bulbs: either a GBF or a 1383.  They are both 20 watts and used in 12 Volt systems. Some cabs have 6, others have 9, and like this one I was in, it had 18 lights (albeit 7 were not working).  In any case, that is 20 watts per bulb that are almost always lit 24 hours a day.  That kind of energy consumption adds up quickly.  Moreover, the heat these bulbs produce can make an already crammed environment, that much more uncomfortable.

The LED equivalents use only 2 Watts of energy and are designed to last up to 50,000 hours, as compared to the others that are rated for only 300 – 2,000 hours.  In addition, the LEDs are cool burning, so they create a brighter atmosphere without any added heat.  Lastly, because these are lights are lit 24 hours a day, the return on investment is rapid!  In summary, I can’t think of any reason NOT to use a LED for elevator cab ceiling lights.

Let’s review and compare the OLD – vs –  NEW

  • 20 Watts Verse a 2 Watt LED = LED wins with Energy Efficiency
  • 1,000 Hours Verse 50,000 Hour LED = LED wins with Longer Life
  • Hot small space or COOL small space = LED wins on Comfort
  • $31/bulb in Savings Each Year with a LED = $558 annual saving for this little Florida restaurant
  • LED Payback is less than 6 months = Wise Investment

So, what’s the best way to light an elevator cab with a LED?  Plug it in!

As a business owner, if someone told me I could save hundreds of dollars each year (thousands if you have more than 1 elevator) and that I won’t have to worry about changing light bulbs that burn out, and it would make me that much more “green,” I would say, “Sign me up! Where do I get them?”

We have both the GBF and the 1383 LED in stock.  Don’t have those in your elevator?  Don’t worry; we know there are other elevator lights.  Call Martek and we will guide you to what you need so you can start saving today! 856-427-9411
